BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
From "Someone To Watch Over Me" to "I Will Survive." It's the journey of women, told through Top-40 music in the new musical production RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women. From the codependence of "I Will Follow Him" to the anger of "These Boots Are Made for Walking," to the cynicism of "What's Love Got To Do With It," and finally to the strength of "Hero." Combining excerpts of 60 songs with women's own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more, this show is "exhilarating!" It's more than just a story worth telling, it's a must-see and must-hear.
For more than the first half of the last century, the voice of women in Top-40 popular music has been one of neediness and dependency. I'll do anything for you; just be my baby, even if you're no good and treat me bad; just LOVE me and I'll stand by my man. By the end of the century, things were quite different. Popular music had come far enough so that women looked for the hero within themselves, were urged to get on their feet and make it happen, ready to stand on her own with or without a man. Messages encompassed "I am woman-hear me roar," to "I will survive" and encouraged women to find their own dreams.
Vanderbilt professor Dr. Dorothy Marcic created the show based on her book, RESPECT: Women and Popular Music, where she analyzed all Top-40 female song lyrics since 1900. Recent feedback from audience members includes: "Your show is one of the best things I have ever seen, period." -Shawn Johnson, Kansas City. "This was one of the most inspiring performances I have attended in my life."-Vladimir Brajkovic, Melbourne, Australia; "It was the musical history of MY life," Sheri Bewitt, Orlando.
Join us for the journey of women from codependence to independence – from "Someone To Watch Over Me" to "I Will Survive." See the progress of women from property of their husbands to presidents of countries in the 20th century – hear it through a dramatic musical presentation.

Gulfport first Friday Art Walk
Arts ⁄ Exhibits
Time:
6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Note: Event occurs the first Friday of every month.
Location: Beach & Shore Blvds, Gulfport, FL 33707
Expanded art village with arts and craft vendors, antique dealers, art demonstrations, live entertainment, and 20 minute mini-classes in glass blowing at the Industrial Arts Center. In the Gulfport Art District, south of 28th Avenue, on Beach Boulevard. Free trolley rides, pet friendly.
Every first Friday and third Saturday of the month
The Art Walk takes place on Beach Blvd in Gulfport, Florida from 6pm-10pm.
"Beach Boulevard was buzzing with activity Saturday night in Gulfport during the July 19 Art Walk. Despite the heat and humidity we are famous for this time of year, there was an abundance of people strolling the street, musicians playing, open shops, and of course, an eclectic variety of restaurants and eateries to inspire even the most selective of diners. Fortunately we were blessed by a clear sky and no rain for this event.
"The artists and vendors earnestly exhibited their work and were happy to share their interests and inspiration with all. In particular I took note of the unique jewelry designs by Kim Windham-O'Leary (KWO 'Second-Find Design") and the dizzying display of color in Byron Howe's (Art On Cloth) tie dye. The Art Walk is a perfect venue for budding as well as seasoned artists to showcase their work and a perfect event that draws visitors from near and far." - Theresa Magaz

While your here, Weedon Island Preserve combines a wonderful nature experience on a site with fascinating historical significance. The Cultural and Natural History Center features classrooms and exhibit areas designed by anthropologists, historians and Native Americans to reflect the art and history of the area's first people. A group of low-lying islands history goes back thousands of years when early peoples such as the Timucuans and Manasotas made the island their home. The center combines a look at artifacts excavated from the site by the Smithsonian in the 1940s, as well as the chance to experience aspects of Native American culture in the exhibit gallery. The preserve also includes a nature experience with a four-mile canoe trail and three-mile hiking trail along with a fishing pier and waterfront picnic sites. Weedon Island Preserve is an expansive 3,000-acre region on Tampa Bay in north St. Petersburg comprised mostly of marine habitats with some uplands. It also is a site rich in cultural history.
